Effective July 1, 2025

Plain-English explainer

Louisiana now withholds SaaS sales tax — what changed and the $100K trigger.

The trip on the monitor above is not a rounding coincidence. Here is the rule behind it — and what founders who wait for a friendly first letter are signing up for.

What changed on July 1, 2025

Louisiana's Department of Revenue activated a sales-tax-withholding mechanism on July 1, 2025 that sits on top of the January 2025 ruling that made subscription software taxable in the state (La. R.S. 47:301(13)(c); LAC 61:III.101). The January ruling established that SaaS sold into Louisiana is retail; the July mechanism is how the state now expects that retail tax to be collected at the source — remitted through the normal filing cadence rather than reconciled after the fact.

What the $100K trigger looks like for SaaS

The threshold is the state's standard economic-nexus line: $100,000 of Louisiana-billed retail sales inside a rolling 12-month window. Once that window crosses, nexus is tripped — not at quarter-close, not at year-end, but the moment the cumulative subscription revenue pushes past the line. If your billing export reads something like $118,712 against a $100,000 ceiling — the exact pattern the monitor above flags — you are already inside the obligation. There is no de minimis and no waiting period for the calendar to flip.

Why founders who ignore it get hit with back-withholding plus interest

The exposure is not a one-time late fee. The Department of Revenue can assess sales tax owed from the original charge date — not from the date a notice happens to land — and interest compounds monthly on the under-withheld balance until the period is closed. Founders who wait for a friendly first letter are the ones paying both the back-tax and the cumulative interest. In this regime, silent exposure is the penalty.

What the trigger looks like for a SaaS

Mirror of the live trip shown above.

  • ~$100K of billed Louisiana subs inside a rolling 12-month window
  • Economic nexus is tripped the moment that cumulative line is crossed — not at quarter-end, not at year-end
  • Register with the Louisiana Department of Revenue inside 30 days of the trip
  • File and remit on the standard cadence — or back-withhold on the months you already missed

What Stonemark does

Four levers, one ledger.

Sales-tax compliance for SaaS is not “calculate the rate.” It is watching one stream of revenue against 25 different state rules, catching the moment a crossover actually happens, and handling the paperwork before it piles up.

Live nexus watch, state by state

Continuously reconciles revenue per U.S. state from your billing platform so the moment a threshold trips, you know — not 90 days later when a penalty notice arrives.

Registration drafts, pre-filled

When a new obligation opens, we generate the actual state paperwork, not a checklist. You review, sign, file. The trivia of department-of-revenue URLs stays with us.

B2B exemption certificates

Subscription renewals, mid-cycle upgrades, and enterprise renewals all need signed resale or exemption certificates. We generate the request, collect the signature, store the document.

Filing-deadline reminders

A registration is the start, not the end. Calendar reminders fire ahead of each monthly, quarterly, or annual filing window — and never quietly age into a penalty.

End-to-end

From trigger to resolved in the same week.

  1. 01

    Connect

Read-only sync with Stripe, Chargebee, Maxio, or a CSV export. We pull transaction-level revenue by billing address — never write back.

  2. 02

    Watch

Each U.S. state’s current rule (dollar-only, transaction-only, or both) is reflected in continuous state-by-state revenue totals.

  3. 03

    Alert

The instant you cross a threshold, an alert fires with the exact state, rule citation, and confirmation the trip is real — not a one-off high invoice.

  4. 04

    Resolve

Registration paperwork, exemption-certificate templates, and a deadline calendar are drafted the same day, ready for your review and signature.
